Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current inflation rate in India?
India's average inflation rate has been around 5–7% over the past decade. The RBI targets 4% inflation. This calculator uses 6% as the default, which is a reasonable long-term estimate for financial planning.
How does inflation affect savings in India?
If your savings earn less than the inflation rate, you're losing purchasing power in real terms. ₹1 lakh kept in a savings account earning 3% while inflation runs at 6% means you're effectively losing 3% of real value every year.
What investments beat inflation in India?
Historically, equities (Nifty 50) have returned 12–14% annually, well above inflation. Equity mutual funds, index funds, and PPF (7.1%) are common inflation-beating options for Indian investors.
What is the Rule of 72?
Divide 72 by the inflation rate to estimate how many years it takes for prices to double. At 6% inflation, prices double in roughly 12 years (72 ÷ 6 = 12). This means ₹100 of goods today will cost ₹200 in 12 years.
