Expense Tracking

The Only Free Expense Tracker That Stores Your Data in Google Drive

By Spentt · May 2025 · 4 min read

Most expense tracking apps have a dirty secret: your financial data lives on their servers. Every purchase you log, every category you pick, every amount you record — all of it stored in someone else's database. You're trusting a company you've never met with a detailed picture of your financial life.

Spentt works differently. When you log an expense, it goes straight to your own Google Drive — not our servers. We literally cannot see your data.

How it works

When you sign in to Spentt with Google, you grant the app permission to access a private app folder in your Google Drive. Spentt creates a single file — spentt-expenses.json — in that folder and reads/writes to it directly from your browser.

The key insight: The data transfer happens between your browser and Google Drive directly. Spentt's servers are never involved. We don't have a copy of your expenses. We can't access them even if we wanted to.

Why Google Drive?

Google Drive was chosen for three reasons:

What Spentt does store

In the interest of full transparency — Spentt does store some data on its servers: your name, email address, and total expense count. This helps us understand how many people are using the app and improve it. Your actual expense details — what you bought, how much you spent, which categories — are never stored on our servers.

How to get started

Getting started takes about 30 seconds:

The app installs on your phone like a native app — open it in Safari or Chrome and add it to your home screen. No App Store required.
